Your Life Path number comes straight from your birth date, and it never changes. To find it, reduce the month, the day, and the year each to a single digit, then add those three results and reduce one last time. The math is simple once you’ve seen it done. Here it is, worked slowly with real dates.
The method in three steps
- Reduce the month to a single digit.
- Reduce the day to a single digit.
- Reduce the year to a single digit.
- Add those three results together and reduce one final time.
The one rule that trips people up: you reduce each part separately first, then add. Adding the whole string of digits at once usually gives the same answer, but reducing in parts is what protects the master numbers we’ll get to below.
Worked example: July 4, 1990
Take 1990-07-04.
Month: July is the 7th month, already a single digit: 7
Day: the 4th, already a single digit: 4
Year: 1990
- 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19
- 1 + 9 = 10
- 1 + 0 = 1
Add the parts: 7 + 4 + 1 = 12
- 1 + 2 = 3

Why “reduce each part first” matters
Try the same date the lazy way, adding every digit in one line: 7 + 0 + 4 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 30, then 3 + 0 = 3. Same answer. So why bother with the careful method?
Because of the exception coming up next. If you mash everything into one sum, you can accidentally skip past a master number that the step-by-step method would have preserved. When the two methods disagree, trust the part-by-part reduction.
The exception: master numbers 11, 22, and 33
Here is the rule that makes numerology more than plain arithmetic. The numbers 11, 22, and 33 are never reduced. Whenever a step lands on one of those, you stop and keep it.
Watch what happens with September 29, 1980 (1980-09-29):
Month: September, the 9th: 9
Day: the 29th
- 2 + 9 = 11
- 11 is a master number, so we stop here. The day is 11, not 2.
Year: 1980
- 1 + 9 + 8 + 0 = 18
- 1 + 8 = 9
Add the parts: 9 + 11 + 9 = 29
- 2 + 9 = 11
- Again 11 is a master number, so we stop.
This Life Path is 11, not 2. If you’d flattened the whole birth date into one sum, you might have reduced straight to 2 and missed it entirely. That’s the trap the careful method avoids. There’s more on what these numbers mean in what are master numbers.
One more: November 8, 1992 (a Life Path 22)
Month: November, the 11th month. That’s a master number on its own, so it stays 11.
Day: the 8th: 8
Year: 1992 gives 1 + 9 + 9 + 2 = 21, then 2 + 1 = 3
Add the parts: 11 + 8 + 3 = 22
22 is a master number, so we stop. This Life Path is 22. Notice how keeping the 11 from November intact was what allowed the 22 to appear.

What the number actually tells you
Once you have your Life Path, read its description as a set of themes rather than a verdict. A 3 leans expressive and social, a 7 leans inward and analytical, and an 11 carries the sensitivity of a 2 turned all the way up.
